New Zealand homes are famous for their beautiful, natural wool carpets. Unfortunately, wool is incredibly absorbent, making a spilled cup of coffee a serious threat. Coffee and tea contain tannins—the same natural plant dyes used to tan leather.
Why DIY Cleaning Often Fails: Wool is highly sensitive to pH levels. Most over-the-counter carpet cleaners and dish soaps are highly alkaline. Applying an alkaline cleaner to a tannin stain on wool can cause a chemical reaction that permanently sets the stain into a yellowish-brown spot.
Step 1: Rehydration. If the coffee stain is old and dried, you need to carefully rehydrate it. Lightly mist the area with cold water. Never use hot water, as heat will set the stain permanently into the wool fibers.
Step 2: Mild Acidity. Tannins require a slightly acidic solution to break their bond. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with one cup of cold water. Gently blot this solution onto the stain using a white microfiber cloth.
Step 3: The Safe Solution. Rather than mixing chemicals at home and risking your expensive wool carpet, use our 'Number One' spray. It is specifically pH-balanced to safely release tannin stains without burning or discoloring natural fibers.
For large spills, milk-based coffees (which introduce proteins and bacteria into the padding), or stubborn dried stains, professional extraction is essential. True Revive Xpert specializes in wool carpet restoration across Central Otago. We flush the tannins and proteins out safely, leaving your carpet fresh and undamaged.
